Every home has a hub.  Ours is the home office/ family room.  Hub is defined as: a place or thing that forms the effective center of an activity, region, or network.  The hub of our home is where family life happens and can be one of the most comfortable, inviting places where our family wants to hang out.  However, hubs also tend be the spaces that get cluttered up first!

I kicked off my New Year by vowing to de-clutter our main hub, the office!  Our home office was known as a formal living room in its former life, so it’s pretty big.  Last year we did some remodeling of the office and added a built in entertainment center and built-in bookshelves.  Now the office serves as a family room too and it really is the place where our family spends 90% of our time.  But, like any room that gets used a lot, it tends to be the room that gets abused.  So when January 1 rolled around I got busy de-junking this space so we can all enjoy it more.

I started by pulling out my 3 favorite pop-up hampers that I use to sort things by “Put-away”, “Throw-away” and “Give-away”.  Then I got busy starting with worst task first- FILING!  It never fails, that no matter how hard I try to stay on top of filing bills and paperwork, there is always a pile to go through.  Then I moved on to built-in bookshelves.  Over the years we have acquired quite a lot of books and my bookshelves were overflowing.  I was able to fill a whole box load of titles to give away.

Lastly, I deep cleaned, by dusting the baseboards, swiping the ceiling fan, vacuuming and mopping.  I also organized my storage bins that double as footstools or coffee tables.  These little bins are perfect for storing blankets!  Now our hub feels more welcoming and relaxing.

Where’s your hub?  Does it need to be spruced up or de-cluttered?  Why not consider making it a goal to de-clutter your hub before January ends?  It’s bound to help make your home a more enjoyable place for the whole family!   Happy organizing!
